Description
Electrotherapy is a physiotherapy treatment method in which small electrical currents are applied through the skin to affected nerves, muscles or tissues to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, promote healing, improve muscle strength, and restore function.
Common Types / Modalities
- TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) — for pain relief.
- EMS / NMES (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) — for muscle activation, strengthening, preventing atrophy.
- Interferential Therapy (IFT) — deeper tissue pain relief and swelling reduction.
- Iontophoresis — delivering medicine through the skin using electrical current.
- Ultrasound therapy (though technically sound waves, often grouped under “physical/electro-modalities”) — helps in soft tissue healing.
